R. Dakin & Company / Dakin Inc USA - Company History of Stuffed Toys
Dakin began as a family business in 1955 importing expensive handcrafted shotguns from Italy and Spain, founded by Richard Y. Dakin. His son Roger B. joined the firm in 1957 and began to diversify the types of products being imported which included bicycles, wooden products, sail boats and TOYS. In a shipment of battery operated trains from Japan were six velveteen stuffed animals, often used by exporters in the Far East as packing material. Roger ordered a small amount of the stuffed animals and they were an instant sales success! Dakin began to design stuffed animals at their USA Headquarters, and launched them as "Dream Pets". Thus began Dakin's "official" launch into the stuffed toy business!
Two examples of early Dream Pets, political mascots for the Democratic and Republican Parties, an Elephant and a Donkey!
Made of velveteen and felt with glued-on features, embroidered tush seam tags intact.
By the mid-1960's Dakin had production facilities in Japan, Hong Kong and Mexico and by 1970 sales had expanded to 35 countries and production was transferred from Japan to Korea.
An example of a plush R. Dakin Bear on all four's with his original hang tag from 1975.
His name is Little Hickory Bear!
In the 1980's and early 1990's Dakin expanded their licensed product base to include Garfield, Muppets, Enesco's Cherished Teddies, and Pink Panther among others.
Garfield (licensed product) from 1981 in two sizes.
Made in Korea by R. Dakin, embroidered tush tag. In French and English for the Canadian market.
Arlene, Garfield's girlfriend, dated 1984.
In 1987 R. Dakin & Company became Dakin Inc. In 1989 Dakin acquired House of Nisbet, a family owned British business founded in 1952 by Peggy Nisbet. This was Dakin's entry into the "collectible" plush market.
Dakin made a limited number of collectible teddy bears, with dated medallions.
Teddy wears a lovely brass heart shaped dated medallion!
In 1990, Korea lost its duty free status as a Most Favoured Nation so by December of that year, Dakin had switched Korean production over to Thailand.
In 1995 Dakin Inc and Applause Inc merged, ousting Hallmark with whom they had signed an agreement in principle in 1990, but had called off the acquisition in that same year, when Applause expressed interest in Dakin. Applause was founded by Wallace Berrie in 1966 as The Wallace Berrie Company. The Applause Division was acquired from Knickerbocker Toys in 1982 but it wasn't until 1986 the company changed its name to Applause Inc.
With this 1995 merger came other licensed products including Smurfs, Disney, Sesame Street, Raggedy Anne, California Raisins, Star Trek and many others. By the early 1990's Dakin alone was already selling in over 80 countries with more than 10,000 production workers throughout the world!
In 1997 the merged company was acquired by a holding company formed by a management group and Frontenac Co. but retained its name.
Though a bit of a complicated history, stuffed animals, teddy bears and other plush items such as this lobster puppet are still labelled as Dakin, copyright Applause and continue to be acclaimed for producing high quality plush.

Is DAKIN known as KING now!
ReplyDeleteKing appears to be a plush mfr & distributor, in business for 20 years provided promotional items to companies, according to their website. I do not believe there is any affiliation with Dakin.
DeleteI agree. I possess 2 originals acquired prior 1971. The pink cat and orange hippo. They still smell of sawdust with authentic label. I have done research. Where is Virginia Kemp? what is their $ value. My pets have huge sentimental and socio economic value to me. Toys are no longer commercially made with such sentimentalities that remain in ones senses forever. To have such, one needs to go back in time and pay much more for such for toys that make lasting impressions. It is also up to parents to not lend immediate satiation of their children's tantrums because it is easier on parents. Old fashioned toys that foster the beginnings of good imagination and new parents' patience to help foster that part of the brain should become part of Public Announcements on TV for children's growth. Bring those old fashioned toys back to life. Anyone in the position to do this, I would like very much to become part of the movement. Thank you.
DeleteI have 2 small leather stuffed animals that I bought in the early 1960's at a candy shop. I think it was Dakin but I'm not sure. There were other animals but I was only about 10 at the time and couldn't buy they. I've always wanted more but can't find them anywhere. I would be happy to post a picture through an email. Anyway, I've looked everywhere and no one has them and nothing is as well made or cute as these. Could it be Dakin?
ReplyDeleteDakin did produce Leather Pets that were similar in size and design to Dream Pets only made of vinyl to look like leather.
DeleteSorry for the typos. My phone wouldn't let me correct them.
ReplyDeleteYou can contact me through my blog: laughinghorseart.blogspot.com Thank you!
ReplyDeleteHi Julie, you can contact me through my website above with your email address referenced, so I can take a look at your animals. Dakin didn't typically use leather. Could they be vinyl? A lot of vinyl animals came over from Japan and many companies in North America sold them. Regards Mandy
DeleteWhat is the pacifier made out of on the goo goo gorilla? My daughter is obsessed and won't keep it out of her mouth. Ughh. Any info on it would be helpful
DeleteSo when did Dakin bite the big one and close it's trademarks up? I have one of the Koalas and also worked the Dakin warehouse in Wheeling unloading billions of stuffed critters
ReplyDeleteI also worked at Dakin in Wheeling for 8 years. I’m not sure I remember you though. Name someone else you worked with. The old building or new one?
DeleteIn the Early 2000s Applause bought back Dakin and began working on the re-release of Dakin Dream Pets. Unfortunately Dakin had lost most (if not all) their product licenses (like Disney, Garfield, etc) and started to have financial difficulties. In 2004, Owner and CEO, Bob Solomon, took his own life. Sadly the company (and assets) was sold off.
DeleteI have a Dankin and Co light brown posable windup bear from 1981. I know nothing about it as it only has the "tush tag" but there is the number 22 in a circle on the tag. I've been searching for years to find out what song my bear plays when wound up. If anyone can help, please email me at whispersatmoonlight@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI would recommend doing a little UTube video of the bear playing his tune and post it on social media to see if anyone recognizes the song!

ReplyDeleteI use to model for Dakin, holding and playing with the stuffed animals, puppets and such for the catalogs. I was only 5 yrs old then. My mom worked for the company R. Dakin in Brisbane, Ca. I would visit her at her job often. I have every animal they ever made in my attic. My son loves stuffy. He keeps asking me when can he play with them. I guess since he's five yrs old now, it's time to dust em off and pass it down. I'm 38 now. Reading everyone's post brought back old memories. Best of luck to everyone who wants one. Hard find. I wish I had the catalogs I posed in. The tiger puppet pose was my fave. Old is Gold. Anyone still have the old catalogs from the 80's. Wishful thinking.
ReplyDeleteI worked at dakin in Brisbane as well. 1974-1979. C.E. Hukins, Virginia, Jessie, Patricia, Paul Roche....just to name a few! Great place to work!

ReplyDeleteI used to have an 80s pink dakin stuffed pig, small maybe 9". I named them Wilbur and they were my everything until I was hospitalized as a teenager and my sister brought it to me but the front desk lost it. I'm 33 now and just had a baby and wish I could find that pig. :(

Hello Sheila - Did you ever find the stuffed pig? I had one as a kid too (really beat up). Was it the one with a red and white cap?
DeleteDid Dakin make toy monkeys made of brown vinyl with stuffed head and body, paws stuffed with heavier stuff and legs/arms that were NOT stuffed. We had a tree in a little shop's window and we hung lots of them up by just one paw of arm or leg. We had lots of people see them, and a lot of people came in to buy one to take home. I tried to keep one for a long time but the vinyl material kind of gave out after period of time but these monkeys were the cutest things with great faces and I wonder if anybody's seen anything like this anywhere. Absolutely no fake fur anywhere on it.

ReplyDeleteHi! I have a dakin teddy bear from i believe 1985. He is a blue teddy bear with felt on the inside of his ears, felt on the bottom of his feet and i believe there was once felt on his nose. I was just wondering if there are any others like them because I would sure be interested in them! The tag is pretty worn though from how many times I have washed him but hopefully someone knows what I'm talking about!
ReplyDeleteI found a replica of a unicorn I once had; only this one I saw had an orange mane and tail. Mine had a solid white body, satin rainbow at the hooves and horn with an electric blue mane and tail. It was a Dakin Fun Farm 1984 unicorn. I would love to find another one.
ReplyDeleteI have an interesting long haired grey and white dog (complete with cropped tail) that was at my grandparents house as long as I can remember. :). I always thought it looked so real, even his hairy feet :). Tag still on it, I wondered about it as it was never "cuddly" as the body is firm and he stands on four legs stiffly like a real little dog.
ReplyDeleteI have a jointed brown teddy. Head, arms and legs move. Love him still
ReplyDeleteI have a Rudolph Red nose reindeer with musical string operated box inside that still works, 1986.

Hello, this is a long shot but I am hopeful. As a baby and up through my early teen yrs I had a puppy that wound up and played a lullaby, it was green body with black ears and I was born 1973. While I was at school in 10th grade, I came home to find all my stuffed animals and posters ripped off and gone. I cried so hard over this puppy and there as a teddy bear as well that I had since birth. My Mom suffers mental illness and every other day I came home something else was gone. Out of everything she took from me I was the most heartbroken over that puppy. I look for one at thrift stores and Salvation Army but no luck. I am curious if anyone has any idea if or how I could find one? I gave up looking for awhile, it stored up emotions that I just didn't want to deal with. Today is the first time in a long time I am trying to find again. Again I know it is a long shot, and I know I just turned 50, but if there is some way to find it it could help heal a memory and me.
ReplyDeleteI forgot to leave contact info, my name is Jackie and my email is jne1973@yahoo.com
