Petz, Anton Kiesewetter Germany Collectible Teddy Bears

Petz, Anton Kiesewetter, (Coburg) Germany - Collectible Teddy Bears

Petz is the tradename/logo created for Anton Kiesewetter, (Coburg) Germany. The original company was founded in 1849, but it began designing and making teddy bears and animals in 1921.

Teddy bears were made from either high quality mohair plush or high quality "art silk" (artificial silk) plush, typically in brown, blonde or golden colours.

Key identification factors for Petz Teddy Bears is their high quality plush, amber glass eyes, felt paw pads, elongated rotund bodies, and, if you are lucky, their logo button!  The Petz logo was created c1947 and all bears from the early 1950's onwards had a milk glass button sewn to their chest with a red Petz bear logo incised on the face.

Petz Teddy has a distinctive "hump" on his back. He is fully disc jointed, and stuffed very firmly with excelsior or wood wool stuffing. Models 25 cm (10 inches) tall or larger will usually have a deep sounding tilt growler in their chest.

The Petz design of a teddy bear classroom was a big hit at the 1949 Toy Fair in Germany, and they later designed a rabbit classroom.

Anton Kiesewetter died in 1955 but the company carried on under his widow Ernestine and son Gerhard. Dolls were added to their product offerings in the 1950's.

Sadly due to cheaper Asian imports coming into the world marketplace, the company was forced to close operations in December 1967.
