Steiff Germany 1957 Catalogue Brochure and the Collectible Animals Featured!
Steiff is the most recognized brand in the realms of Teddy Bear and other soft toy Collecting! Founded in Germany in 1880 by Margarete Steiff, a seamstress, the "Teddy Bear" as we know it, was designed and invented by her nephew Richard in 1902. Steiff has designed and produced nearly EVERY animal found on Earth over the ensuing decades!
The 1957 Issue of the Steiff Brochure, in English for the American market.
Known as the "Button in Ear" Brand (in German: "knopf-im-ohr"), the button was created in 1904 by Margarete's nephew Franz to distinguish Steiff animals from other producer's of the day, and continues to be the Steiff trademark.
As pictured on the cover of the brochure, Steiff "Arco" the German Shepherd. 1957 was his debut! He continued to be issued in mohair plush, in this lying position, with cute lolling felt tongue, in three sizes through 1976.
Steiff Susi Cat, shown in the brochure in two sizes (top left). 1957 was not her debut. Susi has been issued since the 1940s.
This sweet little Steiff Susi Cat (left) was an earlier and smaller issue (10 cm or 4 inches tall) than Susi (right), who also sports her nickel ear button and yellow ear tag (14 cm or 5.5 inches tall).
Steiff Snobby Poodle, available in Black, Grey and White in various sizes. Top and middle of the brochure.
In the larger sizes, Steiff Snobby Poodle is fully jointed (head swivels, legs move). In the medium sizes, just the legs are jointed, and in the smallest size Snobby is unjointed. Examples shown, of all three mohair colours available!
As shown in the top row of the brochure, a little Steiff Elephant (10 cm or 4 inches) but this fellow is a little more modern than the pictured 1950s issue.

A lesser known Steiff collectible, is their line of Wool Miniatures. Actually made from woolen yarn pom poms! For those with limited room for their Collectible displays, the miniatures are a great idea!
A Woolen and Felt Miniature Steiff Snobby Grey Poodle, as shown on row three of the brochure. He is so tiny (6 cm or 2 3/8 inches tall) his button and yellow tag is looped around his body! Woolen Snobby had his debut in 1955.

Lovely article. I saw my "Brownie" Teddy bear on the Roadshow trailer clip this morning. I had that bear and abused it terribly from when I was 3 until I was 6. Since I'm 70 now you can do the math. Mom tore the button out. She was concerned I might try to eat it.
ReplyDeleteHope you still have Brownie? Even abused he is VERY old LOL and you have the provenance!
DeleteI grew up with Steiff. I wish we had more. I'm pretty sure my mom has a tiger and it goes back to the 50s.
