Canadiana Series - Laurentian Pottery
Continuing with Canadian Art Pottery, Laurentian Pottery, also known as La Poterie Laurentienne Inc, (French version of the name), or simply LP, hails from St. Jerome Quebec Canada. Said to be founded in 1939, likely by European Potters emigrating from Europe fleeing their war torn countries, there is a current Yellow Pages listing for this company but most references show them to have ceased production c2005.
Laurentian has various identification base marks including an "LP" shaped like a stylized coffee cup within a circle, "Quebec", "Canada" and in later years, a 3 Tree logo of triple triangles. Most Laurentian pieces are also incised with a mold number. Some foil paper labels have also shown up but those are rare for obvious reasons.
Laurentian made vases, mugs and steins, dinnerware, coffee sets, souvenir pieces like figurines and ashtrays, and many other ceramic wares. One of their popular ceramics treatments was a unique "Lava Drip" glaze. An overlay of unglazed rough textured pottery dripped around the outside upper rims or edges. Each piece a one-of-a-kind item due to the hand crafting involved.
An example of "Lava Drip" in Laurentian's Tundra pattern is this Spoon Rest.
The "LP" stylized identification mark is shown on the base of the Spoon Rest.
Details of the Spoon Rest can be found HERE.
A Laurentian retro kitschy design c1960's to late 1970's is "Magic Mushrooms", found in many Canadian kitchens decorating cannisters and other kitchenwares. Here is a coffee pot in this popular pattern.
Details of the Coffee Pot can be found HERE.
Enjoy your search for Laurentian Pottery pieces. A great, often overlooked, Canadiana Art Pottery collectible!

DeleteI found a puppy dog cookie jar at a thrift store. It has the three mountain stamp with CANADA and the number 454. I can’t seem to find it anywhere on the internet…ever seen anything like it? It looks like a McCoy copy…different colour, white with black and brown spots.
