Dominion Glass Company - 11th in Canadiana Series

Diamond Flint/Dominion Glass/Domglas - 11th in Canadiana Series

Glass production in Canada began in the early part of the 19th Century.  Many firms came and went but one of the most enduring was most recently known as Domglas

The Yuile Brothers, William and David, purchased the factory of Foster Glass Works in St. John Quebec Canada in 1878. The Foster Brothers, George, Henry and Charles had arrived from the USA prior to 1857 and were producing blown glass containers and telegraph insulators. The Yuile Bros renamed the operation Excelsior Glass Company. The company was moved to Montreal Quebec and became North American Glass Company Inc in 1883, which then became Diamond Glass Company in 1891 and then finally Diamond Flint Glass Company Ltd in 1902.

Then began the process of expansion across Canada by acquiring control of many glass works including Burlington Glass, Hamilton Glass, Nova Scotia Glass Company, and many additional factories in Alberta, Ontario and Quebec. This incorporation resulted in the new name Dominion Glass Company Ltd in 1913. It would remain so until 1976 when the name became Domglas.

Pressed glass, imitating the pinwheels, stars, and floral designs of the more expensive and time consuming process of cut glass was immensely popular c1900 through the 1930's. Dominion Glass had over 5,000 different molds for their Depression Era Tablewares!

Dominion phased out most of their earlier depression era glass tableware c1940's to 1950's to concentrate on hotel/restaurant wares, bottles and jars. Selling to the middleman distribution businesses, Dominion issued catalogue flyers of their designs regularly, featuring sturdy restaurant items, colourfully printed glassware for the home retailers, and practical items for home and trade uses such as insulators, ashtrays, vases, fishbowls, mixing bowls etc.

These catalogue pages help us identify many of the glassware patterns and designs of the Eames, mid-century glassware era.

Most of the glassware Dominion produced from at least c1940 onwards was marked with either a plain embossed large capital "D" or a smaller capital "D" within an embossed diamond outline.

In 1978 Dominion's Wallaceburg Ontario factory was taken over by CB Pak and the plant became Libbey-St. Clair. It was renamed Libbey Canada when Libbey Inc purchased its assets in 1993.

In 1989, Consumer's Glass Company gained a near monopoly of Canadian-made glass container sales with it's purchase of Domglas.
